No matter where I travel, I find a brewery nearby. Key West is no exception. Here, at the end of A1A, you will find First Flight, the Southernmost Brewery. Key West is known as a party town and, well, a lot of beer is drunk here every day. I wasn’t surprised to find a brewery this far south. The location is perfect and they offer an awesome Happy Hour.
At 301 Whitehead Street, this place is in the heart of Old Town. This section of Key West is known as the historic district. In the old Pan Am building is where First Flight has set up their brewery. This is the birthplace of Pan American World Airways. Pan-Am’s first tickets were sold out of the building in 1927. So, don’t be surprised when you enter and the bar and restaurant have an airport… airline… theme. Retro, but very cool. From the metal covered bar top to the Pan-Am memorabilia around the place, you feel like you have stepped back into a better time for air travel.
First Flight offers three different brews … and they are brewed on site.
- Havana Red – this is their Amber Ale. It has hints of roasted chocolate, caramel malts, and a mild hoppy finish.
- Maverick IPA – a mild pale ale with a clean crisp finish
- Main Squeeze – a citrus wheat that is clean and crisp. They brew it with fresh Florida citrus peels to enhance the flavor and aroma.
Happy Hour is from 4 to 6 pm every day. They offer drink specials as well as discounts on house-brewed beer. I am a huge fan of Happy Hours. It lets you enjoy a beer or cocktail, at a discounted price, and…. they usually offer some interesting appetizers.. again at a special price. I call that a win-win!
So… what did we try while there? Well, we had the Tuna Poke Wontons, the Chicken Wings and a bucket of fries. The food was really tasty. Paired with the beer, it was a nice way to start off the evening. This was our first stop before heading over to Mallory Square to enjoy the world famous Key West Sunset.
First Flight offers a nice selection of beers. Even though they only brew three, they have made sure the quality is there. Main Squeeze was my favorite and I would definitely come back and enjoy a pint, or two again. The food was tasty. I have had a few locals state they haven’t been too impressed with the dinner or lunch service. But, the food offerings off of the Happy Hour menu were good. The service was ok. Typical bar service, but nothing that would keep me from coming back. Overall, if you are lucky enough to be in Key West, head over to First Flight and enjoy a pint from the Southernmost Brewery.
