Peanut Butter Porter, Pils, Ale, and an IPA

I am in love with the Craft Beer Club.  Each month I receive four different beers and this month, well I hit the jackpot.  This month’s box included a peanut butter porter.  Yep, it’s as awesome as it sounds.  But, before we get onto the porter, let’s talk about the two breweries featured this month.

The Breweries
River Horse Brewing Company

Located in Lambertville, New Jersey.  If you have to look that up like I did, it’s north of Philadelphia.  It was founded in 1995 by two brothers.  Then in 2007, two friends, Chris Walsh and Glen Bernabeo, came in and turned the brewery around. With their guidance and leadership, the brewery is now one of New Jersey’s top craft breweries.  They reformulated some of the brews and updated the packaging.  In 2013, they moved to Ewing, New Jersey to a larger facility.

So, where does the name River Horse come from?  It’s the nickname for the hippopotamus.  The ancient Egyptians believed in the Beer God, who appeared to them in the image of a hippo.  I thought that was pretty darn cool.

They offer five year-round beers and eleven seasonal beers.  Additionally, they have a barrel aged and sour series.

Wild Ride Brew Company

This brewery is located in the heart of Redmond, Oregon.  They offer over sixty styles of beer.  In my Craft Beer Club box, I received two of their most awarded beers (the Electri-Fly IPA and Nut Crusher Peanut Butter Porter).  The brewery idea began back in 2011 but didn’t become a reality until the building was bought in 2013.

They pride themselves on having a beer for anyone.  From the lightest beer to a hoppy IPA, you should be able to find a beer you want to drink.

The Beers

River Horse Brewing Company

peanut butter porter

  • Special Ale – This was a really good beer.  It is deep, hazy amber in color, but offers notes of caramel, chocolate, and coffee with soft floral notes to balance it out.
  • Roly Poly Pils – A classic Czech-Style Pilsner, yet it had a very American hoppy finish.  It was a drinkable beer with an IBU of 28.

Wild Ride Brew Co.

peanut butter porter

  • Electri-Fly IPA – A true IPA with an IBU of 65.  If you like IPAs, this will probably speak to you.
  • Nut Crusher Peanut Butter Porter – With notes of chocolate and caramel, this porter also has the addition of creamy peanut butter.  If you love peanut butter and porters, you will flip over this one.  It was, by far, my favorite in the box.

Overall, great box this month.  Cannot wait to see what comes next month.
